Broadly there are two types of service provided by your county child support agency-full child support services or income withholding only services.
Full child support services (IV-D)
You may need to pay a $25 application fee and you simply fill out the online services application form and send them to your county child support office-the IV-D service is appropriate where you are a parent of the child.
Non IV-D child support services
This service is appropriate where you already have a court order for child support. The child support office will help you to enforce this order and collect your child support payments.
MN child support calculator
You can access a MN child support calculator on their website also which allows you to estimate the amount of child support which a court may order to be paid.
This will depend on the income of both parents, how many children live in each parent’s home, any spousal maintenance orders in being, benefits received, medical and dental costs for the child, child care costs and other factors.
You can input directly all of this information and you will get an estimate of the amount likely to be awarded. It is important to remember that all child support cases will be determined by the Court on the basis of the individual circumstances of the case and the MN child support calculator can only give you an estimate.
MN child support guidelines
Ultimately the amount of child support payable in Minnesota will be determined by the MN child support guidelines which take account of:
- The parents gross monthly income
- The number of children

The gross income of both parents will set the basic support likely to be ordered for the children but gross income will not include overtime, child support received or receivable, spouse’s income, public assistance, overtime, child support or spousal maintenance paid.
